Starting first with the national picture. And we can see a trough clearing away from the south-east of the country and out over the Tasman Sea during the morning. As it does, that will bring the bulk of showers away with it, but cooler south-westerly winds extending even up into New South Wales.
The rest of southern Australia is looking mostly clear thanks to a large ridge of high pressure building, but we’ll get quite warm across south-western parts of WA.
For northern Australia, very little change compared to the last few days. We are still seeing severe heatwave conditions across our north, but some afternoon relief with isolated scattered thunderstorms again expected through most areas.
And then on Thursday night we’ll see a cold front approaching the south-east of the country that will sweep over on Friday across the south-eastern states, bringing further showers and a brief return to winter conditions as we head into the weekend.
So now, state-by-state look, starting off with Queensland. Patchy morning fog across eastern areas, but otherwise we are expecting a dry and more settled day across the state, and that’s due to dry southerly winds extending up from the south. So some storms are expected to cross the north of Queensland, mostly across the north-west, through the Gulf Country and out towards the Northern Goldfields. But the rest of the state is looking mostly dry and very hot, reaching the low 40s in the west and the mid to high 30s across the east. But at night we will see a cooler southerly wind pushing through the south-east coast, bringing some relief for that part of the state. For Brisbane, though, a hot day. It’s only 35 °C and partly cloudy up in Cairns, going for a maximum of 32 °C.
Now to New South Wales, because there’s some patchy flurries of snow across the Snowy Mountains during the morning as that trough clears off the coast. Showers clear central New South Wales during the morning, but we could see a bit of cloud and showers sticking around into the afternoon along the south coast. Behind those showers, though, a dry and sunny day to follow, but we will see those cooler southerly winds across southern parts of New South Wales. For Sydney, a possible morning shower and then a dry day to follow. 23 °C.
Partly cloudy for Canberra with a maximum of 21 °C.
Down to Victoria. We could also see some patchy snow flurries across the north-eastern ranges during the morning as that trough moves through. Showers clear away from the west, but stick around Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and Gippsland, probably likely into the afternoon. Cooler south-westerly winds, though, so maximum temperatures really only reaching the high teens in the south and slightly warmer north of the divide. For Melbourne, a possible morning shower, most likely in the eastern suburbs, going for a maximum of 18 °C and for Mildura partly cloudy, top of 25 °C.
Now down to Tasmania. In the morning, most districts should see a couple of showers, but that trough clears away. We will see dry conditions as we head into the afternoon, but at night we could see a light shower redevelop across the west of the state. That’s as the next cold front approaches. Otherwise, looking like a mostly dry and mild day for many. For Hobart, partly cloudy, 20 °C and the high teens to low 20s across northern parts of the state.
Now across to South Australia. And other than the possible light shower across the Mount Gambier area during the morning, we are expecting a dry day across the state due to a high-pressure system building across the west. A little bit of cloud in the morning on the coast, but that will clear to a mostly sunny day for most people, and it will be a little bit cooler as well, only reaching the low 20s in the south with those cooler winds moving through. For Adelaide, partly cloudy, top of 20 °C, but then reaching the low 30s across northern parts of the state.
Across to Western Australia, we’ll see easterly winds building, temperatures starting to climb across the Wheatbelt and all the way out towards Perth and the coast as well. So temperatures a little bit above average at this time of year, Perth 29 °C and sunny conditions. But into the afternoon we could see a thunderstorm developing across the northern Gascoyne towards the western Pilbara, but not much rainfall is expected, and otherwise, expecting a hot day across the north-west of the state.
Finally, across northern Australia, we do see showers and storms continuing across the Kimberley as well as the Top End. In addition to severe heatwave conditions. Maximum temperatures again reaching the high 30s to low 40s across many locations, but dry conditions through Central Australia. 35 °C and sunny conditions for Alice Springs and a possible storm up in Darwin. Also going for 35 °C.
That’s the forecast for today.
