A new First Nations Strategy will seek to drive understanding, recognition, and respect of First Nations people across the City of Parramatta.
The strategy, which has been in development and consultation for almost two years, builds on the legacy and learnings of Council’s Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan, which increased spend in procurement from First Nations businesses and delivered greater incorporation of First Nations culture into programming including at Riverside Theatres and Parramatta Artists’ Studios.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor said the new five-year plan centres Dharug and First Nations people and communities at the heart of what Council does.
“The Dharug and First Nations community is an important part of the unique tapestry of the Parramatta LGA,” Cr Esber said.
“Our goals and actions must reflect the needs and aspirations of Dharug and other First Nations people who have a connection to this Country.
“Parramatta has always been an important gathering place for First Nations people, and we want to ensure it continues to be.”
The strategy is focused around five pillars: social justice, cultural leadership, social cohesion, celebration and accountability.
It will see Council continue with existing commitments, such as the Warami Program and First Nations programming in Council community facilities, and further identify and act on opportunities to increase First Nations specific applications to Council’s Community Grants Program, improving the delivery of local services and programs.
It will also include an audit of civic participation and identify any barriers for First Nations people, identify cultural education opportunities, embed First Nations First Frameworks in Community Hubs programming, and improve the understanding of the role of the Internal Ombudsman for First Nations people amongst other actions.
Council will also work closely with the Dharug Nation to improve Land Access and Caring for Country to enable cultural practice and create awareness about Dharug history on specific local sites.
