City of Swan residents save tens-of-thousands of kgs from landfill

The City of Swan has had a successful first outing in Australia’s biggest garage sale.

The Garage Sale Trail, an annual festival of pre-loved stuff, saw thousands of sales take place simultaneously across Australia over two weekends in November.

In the City of Swan there were almost 350 garage sale events with more than 5,000 residents participating from suburbs including Caversham, Guildford and Ellenbrook.

This mammoth turnout resulted in an estimated 62,000kg of homewares, clothing, toys and books being sold and reused locally – a quarter of which would have otherwise gone to landfill.

City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said it was a great outcome, with participating households reducing their environmental footprint and preventing waste.

“Local governments like ours play a key leadership role in the transition to a more sustainable future,” he said.

“Events like this help to foster a more circular economy, where our local community recycles and reuses items, instead of just putting them in the bin.”

Woodbridge resident Wendy Farrant, who held a garage sale across the two weekends with her husband John, said it had been a fun way to connect with her community, make some money and stop good quality items from ending up in landfill.

“I think it makes sense to try and keep stuff in use for as long as we can,” she said.

“It was great to see so many people get involved and thinking about this stuff.

“We had a lot of conversations with people about what they consume in their day to day life.”

The Garage Sale Trail will return to the City in November 2023, but in the meantime residents can save their materials from landfill by donating items in good condition to their local charity store or advertise them on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree.

The City will also continue to recycle goods at the Recycling Centre – Bullsbrook and Recycling Centre – Malaga.
