City to provide grants to local groups to host Christmas meal events

The City of Greater Bendigo is offering grants of up to $1,000 to community groups interested in coordinating local, community meal events focused on inclusion and connection this Christmas.

The grants are aimed at supporting a range of small, local events across

Greater Bendigo between December 18 and 25 rather than one large event taking place in central Bendigo.

City of Greater Bendigo Community Partnerships Manager Andie West said from 2014 to 2019 a centralised community Christmas lunch had taken place with the venue, food and food preparation provided by All Seasons Resort.

“COVID-19 considerations meant the community Christmas lunch could not take place for the past two years, however a number of small, local events were able to be supported instead,” Andie West said.

“We have received really positive feedback from many people who attended the small, local events. And with ownership of the All Seasons Resort having recently changed hands, it is a good opportunity to reassess how inclusion and connection can continue to be promoted at Christmas time.

“Evaluation data from the 2021 events indicates there is a preference for the small, local community event approach. The feedback shows that this approach helps to create a greater sense of belonging and more meaningful, enduring connections.

“We are really keen for community groups to start thinking now about community meal events they may wish to support at Christmas time and consider applying for this funding.

“Events need to be welcoming and inclusive and take place at a public venue.”
