Civic and State Square Masterplan Redevelopment Underway

The Territory Labor Government’s Civic and State Square Masterplan redevelopment is underway, with the release of the Chan Building demolition tender.

The State Square overhaul is a critical part of the historic $200 million Darwin City Deal, delivered in partnership with the Australian Government and the City of Darwin.

As part of the deal, Darwin’s Civic and State Square precinct will be revitalised to create cool, green spaces for the whole community and tourists to enjoy through activated spaces.

Demolition of this building is the next step of the redevelopment, with projects such as the underground car park nearing completion.

The remediation of this site will provide additional public open green space within the CBD and further amenity for Territorians and visitors within the Civic and State Square precinct.

The Darwin City Deal will also see the establishment of a Charles Darwin University campus and student accommodation in the CBD – bringing up to 1000 students to the city centre.

The Chan Building demolition contract will be staged from March 2020, allowing preparation works to occur whilst the building is in the final stages of decommissioning.

The demolition is anticipated to be completed by mid-2020.

Quotes attributed to Chief Minister Michael Gunner:

“Darwin is the capital of the North and our City deal recognises our CBD is an economic driver and will support and create thousands of local jobs.

“Every great city has a vibrant city centre, and the Civic and State Square Masterplan will deliver on our city’s great potential.

“Our city centre will become a tropical, green, cool and shaded oasis that will provide a spacious place for events, festivals, gatherings and displays.”
