The Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre is preparing to welcome some of its youngest audience members yet, with all performances of the award-winning An Uncertain Time selling out ahead of its three-day season from 29–31 July.
Created especially for babies aged 0–12 months and their carers, An Uncertain Time is a unique sensory theatre experience unlike anything previously presented at the Civic Theatre.
Through music, movement and immersive play, the performance draws on early childhood research to create moments of connection, curiosity and wonder.
Civic Theatre Manager Claire Harris said the overwhelming response to the season demonstrated there was a strong appetite for theatre experiences designed specifically for the community’s youngest members.
“We’re incredibly excited to welcome our youngest audience members into the Civic Theatre,” Ms Harris said.
“People often think theatres are grand buildings designed only for traditional plays or concerts, but the Civic Theatre is so much more than that.
“Live performance can take many forms, and this production demonstrates that the theatre really is a place for everyone – even babies just a few months old.”
All seven performances sold out well before opening, with audience numbers intentionally kept small to create an intimate experience for babies and their carers.
Ms Harris said the sell-out season reinforced the need for experiences that support connection between babies and their parents or carers.
“We have thousands of children through our venue every year across our schools, children’s and family programs,” Ms Harris said.
“Offering something specifically designed for infants and the important adults in their lives is a natural next step for us.
“In a world where families are constantly busy, this production offers a chance to slow down, connect and experience something beautiful together. That’s a powerful thing.”
Created by award-winning theatre maker Sarah Austin and produced by Performing Lines, An Uncertain Time received the 2022 Green Room Award for Outstanding Work for Children and Families for its innovative approach to sensory theatre for infants.
The Civic Theatre is also extending the impact of the visit beyond the stage by partnering with Sarah Austin to deliver a professional development workshop for local early childhood educators.
Following the Thursday afternoon performance, educators will have the opportunity to observe An Uncertain Time before participating in Sensory Arts Practice in Early Childhood – a practical workshop exploring how sensory theatre, storytelling and arts-based play can foster curiosity, connection and learning in early childhood settings.
Ms Harris said bringing artists into the community to share their knowledge was another way the Civic Theatre was contributing beyond live performance.
“We’re always looking at ways the Civic Theatre can contribute beyond performance alone. Bringing artists into our community to share their knowledge is another way we’re investing in creativity and lifelong learning.”
