Closure Of Bunnaloo And Womboota Waste Drop-Off Sites

Murray River Council

Murray River Council will be closing the free Waste Free Drop-Off Sites at Bunnaloo and Womboota, effective May 1 2024.

The decision follows a review of Council’s waste and resource recovery facilities; looking at operational and resourcing costs, community use, environmental impacts and other options available to users.

The free drop-off sites will remain operational until close of business Tuesday April 30 2024, with total closures and removal of skip bins taking effect from May 1 2024.

Director Planning and Environment, Rod Croft said the decision takes into account operational costs and unsustainable cleanup expenses.

“With the introduction of standard rural waste collection services in the area, the continued provision of free, unmanned drop-off points is now unsustainable for Council.”

“Ongoing illegal dumping and misuse of bins have also compounded operation and maintenance costs, amounting to approximately $10,000 yearly in cleanup expenses and an additional $25,000 each year at each site in skip bin rental and emptying fees,” he said.

The free, unmanned drop-off sites were established 15-20 years ago to serve as an interim measure for residents without access to kerbside collection services and have been in operation ever since.

But with most residents in the service area now having access to standard rural waste collection services, the operational costs at the site are becoming unsustainable.

Mr Croft emphasised that Bunnaloo and Womboota rates do not cover the operation of the site.

“Because the Womboota and Bunnaloo drop-off facilities are not a ‘user-pays’ system, they do not generate an income to service their operation. Rate payers in this location are not currently paying for this service via their rates. There is also no specific fee or charge that Bunnaloo and Womboota rates cover to run the operation of the site.”

Mr Croft said council acknowledged it would be a change for some customers.

“Whilst we understand some locals have enjoyed the convenience of the facility, we appreciate the community’s understanding as we collectively strive for more consistency across our Council area including sustainable and efficient waste management options.”

Residents are encouraged to utilise the Waste Facilities at Moama and Mathoura, offering more comprehensive resource recovery and recycling solutions than the existing bin stations.

While general waste drop-offs at Transfer Stations incur fees, items, including scrap metal, cardboard, mixed recyclables, Ewaste, and motor oil, can be deposited for free.

Those needing to discuss their waste disposal options can contact council’s Waste Team on 1300 087 004 during business hours.
