Kiama Council has formally censured Councillor Karen Renkema-Lang for a breach of its Code of Conduct.

Councillors voted 5 to 2 to censure Cr Renkema-Lang for breaching Clause 3.1a and Clause 3.1c of the Code of Conduct.

Councils can formally censure councillors for misconduct under Section 440G of the Local Government Act 1993.

The censure follows a complaint made to Council earlier this year, alleging Cr Renkema-Lang had breached the Code of Conduct.

All complaints must be dutifully investigated and managed in accordance with the Procedures for the administration of the Code of Conduct.

This is the same requirement as all NSW councils.

Accordingly, Council appointed an investigator who found elements of the Code of Conduct had been breached and recommended formal censure of the Councillor.

The Procedures for the administration of the Code of Conduct also prevent disclosure of the details of Code of Conduct matters.

The Office of Local Government will be notified of the outcome.
