Community event to cheer on Matildas as World Cup campaign kicks off

Waverley Council

Bondi Pavilion will come alive to the sound of a cheering crowd when the Australia vs the Republic of Ireland FIFA Women’s World Cup match is livestreamed there this Thursday night, 20 July.

It will all take place in the Garu Courtyard of the Pavilion with entry from 7pm and the match commencing at 8pm. Tickets are free, however registration is essential as capacity is limited.

Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos said Waverley Council was excited to support the Matildas with the event.

“Waverley Council is absolutely delighted to be hosting this live screening for the whole family to enjoy and I can’t think of a better place to be in Waverley on this historic evening of sport!” Mayor Masselos said.

“The showdown between our much-loved Matildas, and Ireland, promises to be a stellar match and we’re so very proud of our women in green and gold for all that they’ve achieved on the world stage.

“The Waverley Local Government Area (LGA) is home to people from around the world – including a massive Irish community - and we’ll be really glad to see many of our Irish friends at the event – no doubt in friendly competition!”

In the 2021 Australian Bureau of Statistics census, 12% of people in the Waverley LGA indicated they had Irish ancestry, making it the third most common ancestral heritage in the area.

Please note the event is BYO food and drink. Bring your picnic rug, blanket or low-lying chair. No glass, alcohol, balloons or confetti cannons permitted.

Other Women’s World Cup matches will also be livestreamed in the Garu Courtyard at the Bondi Pavilion:
