Stinger Nets Installation To Help Beat Summer Heat

Swimmers heading to the beach to cool down this summer will have extra protection from marine stingers as nets are installed at the city’s most popular beaches this week.

Townsville’s stinger season runs from November through to May, when the risk of encountering dangerous jellyfish like box jellyfish and Irukandji increases in coastal waters.

Mayor Nick Dametto said installing stinger nets across Magnetic Island, The Strand, Pallarenda and Balgal Beach was part of Council’s commitment to public safety.

“We know that box jellyfish and Irukandji are common across our beaches from November to May, which is why Council installs stinger nets each year. We want visitors to our beaches to have an extra layer of protection from these dangerous animals while still being able to enjoy our popular swimming spots,” Cr Dametto said.

“Stinger nets will be installed at six locations from Tuesday this week. Once they’re installed, swimmers should stick to swimming inside the nets and between the red and yellow flags and follow any advice from surf lifesavers.”

Surf Lifesaving Queensland lifeguards will be on duty at key beaches, including The Strand, from 9am daily this summer.

Stinger net locations include Balgal Beach, Horseshoe Bay, Picnic Bay, The Strand North and South and Pallarenda Beach.

Swimmers are reminded to avoid sitting on or interfering with stinger nets to prevent stingers entering the net.
