Winners of Administrative Review Tribunal Moot Competition 2026

Administrative Review Tribunal

A team from the University of Sydney has won the Tribunal’s 2026 moot competition, defeating Bond University in the grand final on Friday 23 October.

This year’s grand final topic saw the teams present opposing arguments in a mock hearing for a privacy matter before the Guidance and Appeals Panel. The fact scenario was similar to that considered in the high-profile Tribunal guidance decision Bunnings Group Limited and Privacy Commissioner.

The event was held in person at our Sydney registry before a judging panel of one Tribunal deputy president and 2 senior members.

The panel praised both teams for their advocacy skills in oral arguments and the quality of their written submissions. While impressed by all participants, the panel said it was the University of Sydney’s ability to engage with the bench and respond to some challenging questions that earned them the win.

The competition commenced with 16 teams representing 12 universities from across Australia:

  • Adelaide University
  • Bond University
  • LaTrobe University
  • Monash University
  • Queensland University of Technology
  • University of New South Wales
  • University of Queensland
  • University of Sydney
  • University of Tasmania
  • University of Western Australia
  • University of Wollongong
  • Victoria University.

Now in its second year, the competition aims to expose law students to the distinct way tribunals operate and inspire them to consider a career in administrative law after completing their studies.

The Tribunal congratulates all participants on their efforts and looks forward to hosting the competition again in 2027.
