The Bass Coast community is invited to have their say on Bass Coast Shire Council’s draft Place Naming Policy, which will guide how roads, reserves, buildings, facilities and other Council-managed public places are named into the future.
The draft policy aims to provide a clear, consistent and transparent approach to place naming, while ensuring names reflect Bass Coast’s rich history, cultural heritage and unique identity.
Developed in line with Geographic Names Victoria’s naming rules, the policy sets out the principles and process for naming new places and considering requests to rename existing ones. It also recognises the importance of community consultation, Traditional Owner values and local heritage in shaping place names.
The policy supports the Victorian Government’s target for 70 per cent of all new commemorative place names to honour women, as outlined in Our Equal State: Victoria’s Gender Equality Strategy and Action Plan 2023-2027.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said the policy would help ensure place names reflected the stories, people and history that make Bass Coast unique.
“Place naming is an important responsibility of Council. The names we give to our roads, parks and public places become part of our community’s identity and help tell the story of Bass Coast for generations to come.
“This policy provides a clear and transparent process for considering place naming proposals, including commemorative names put forward by our community.
“We encourage everyone to read the draft policy and share their feedback. Community input will help ensure we have the right approach to recognising our local history, celebrating significant contributions and creating meaningful connections to place.”
