Community Selects Name for New Community Centre

Wyndham City is pleased to announce that the new family centre currently under construction in Manor Lakes has a new name: Birnbial Family Centre.

Birnbial (pronounced Bin-beel) is a Wadawurrung word for rainbow, and this name reflects the aspiration for this family centre to promote bright futures for a diverse, emerging community.

Residents voted on a name for the new $8.2 million centre, and the shortlist of names was compiled in consultation with the Registered Aboriginal Party, the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

Wyndham Mayor Cr Susan McIntyre said: “We thank the community for their feedback to help us find a name for this wonderful new family centre which will provide essential services close to home.”

“Wyndham City is committed to working towards Reconciliation, and the selection of a name emerging from Wadawurrung language is an important acknowledgement of the Aboriginal heritage of our City.”

Located at 84 Holyoake Parade in Manor Lakes, the Birnbial Family Centre will open in early 2023 to support the growing community with three and four-year-old kindergarten, maternal child health, a toy library and other family support services.

The centre will be operated by Wyndham City’s early years partner, KU Children’s Services and is being built next door to the Ngarri Primary School, which opens in 2023, as well as sports fields and pavilions to be completed in 2024.

The construction of this family centre is supported by a $3 million Victorian Government Building Blocks Grant and $1 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund.
