  • Cook Labor Government committed to promoting healthy lifestyles

Schools across Western Australia can now apply for a share in $195,000 to support more students to walk, wheel or ride to school through the Cook Labor Government’s popular Your Move program.

The Connecting Schools Grant is available to schools achieving positive active travel results through the program.

This includes achievements in dedicated walking or bike riding days, reduced car use by families, and improved rates of walking, bike riding or scooting for the school commute.

Tiered funding streams are offered and designed to support schools to improve bike infrastructure and increase students’ road safety skills. Packages include:

  • bike and scooter parking facilities;
  • bike skills and road safety education workshops; and
  • skills tracks.

More than 340 Western Australian schools are registered with Your Move, representing a growing number of school communities dedicated to helping students and their families and carers to walk, wheel and ride to and from school.

The Cook Labor Government is committed to making it safer and easier to embrace active travel by investing in targeted initiatives and infrastructure upgrades across WA.

This includes the roll out of signalised pedestrian crossings and 40 km/h speed limits expanded to warden crossings outside designated school zones.

More than $1.4 million has been delivered through the Connecting Schools Grant program since 2018.

The Connecting Schools Grant is made possible through a partnership between the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure and Department of Education.

Eligible schools are encouraged to apply by 2November 2026.

As stated by Transport and Major Infrastructure Minister Rita Saffioti:

“It’s great to see so many Western Australian schools doing their part to get more kids walking, wheeling or riding to school and we’re proud to be supporting them through this program.

“Last year, schools delivered more than 3,100 activities to promote active travel and on average, schools that received these grants boosted active travel rates by 13 per cent.

“We want to make it easier and safer for families to embrace active travel and reduce car trips, traffic congestion and parking pressures at the school gates.”

As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:

“These grants give schools practical support to make active travel easier, while helping students build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

“It’s also a fantastic way for kids and families to start the school day active and connected to their local community.

“I encourage all eligible schools to take up this opportunity and get more students walking, riding or scooting to school.”
