This week is National Carers Week. Taking place from 11 – 17 October 2026, the week aims to recognises the vital role of our unpaid carers. This year’s theme is: Care for a Carer.
In Knox, more than 17,000 people provide unpaid care, supporting family members, friends or neighbours with disability, illness, mental health concerns, addiction or age-related support needs.
Unpaid caring can be ongoing role that often continues day and night, with little opportunity for a break. Showing empathy, acknowledging the load carers carry and recognising the importance of their contribution can help carers feel seen and supported.
A free weekly carers exercise class delivered through our partnership with Knox Leisureworks, has brought carers together each Wednesday during school terms for seven years.
The session supports carers’ physical wellbeing, while the cuppa and conversations afterwards help reduce loneliness and create connection between carers.
Participants describe the class as friendly, non-competitive and something to look forward to, with varied exercises and time to share experiences, practical tips and a laugh.
“I’m truly grateful for the carers exercise class. It gives us more than information – it gives us friendship, belonging, understanding, encouragement and hope. Most importantly, it reminds us that we are not alone on this journey,” Sharon said.
This National Carers Week, we encourage you to recognise the carers in your lives and beyond through small acts of support, such as checking in, sharing information or offering practical help.
