The Crisafulli Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen water security for the Toowoomba region, with construction now underway on the Cressbrook Dam Safety Improvement Project.
The $54 million Crisafulli Government investment will strengthen dam safety, improve flood resilience and help secure a reliable water supply for more than 180,000 people across the region.
The project will widen the dam’s spillway, raise the embankment, upgrade monitoring systems and ensure this critical water asset meets contemporary safety standards.
The former Labor Government neglected regional water security and allowed critical water infrastructure to deteriorate, reducing dam capacity and leaving Queenslanders to pay the price after a decade of decline and inaction.
The Crisafulli Government is investing in the water infrastructure Queenslanders rely on, delivering a safer, stronger and more resilient Cressbrook Dam for the region’s growing communities.
Treasurer, Minister for Energy and Minister for Home Ownership and Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki said construction commencing on the project was an important milestone for the Toowoomba region.
“After years of delays, the Crisafulli Government is getting on with the job and delivering the investment needed to strengthen Cressbrook Dam and secure the Toowoomba region’s water future,” Treasurer Janetzki said.
“Our $54 million commitment is a significant investment in this critical piece of infrastructure and demonstrates that when regional Queensland needs investment, this Government gets on with delivering it.
“With construction now underway, this is another important milestone for the Toowoomba region, supporting a safer dam, stronger water security and the infrastructure needed to underpin future growth.”
Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said the Crisafulli Government was backing practical projects that strengthen water security and protect regional Queensland communities.
“Cressbrook Dam is critical to the Toowoomba region, providing water for more than 180,000 people, and these safety upgrades will help protect that supply for generations to come,” Minister Leahy said.
“Widening the spillway, raising the dam crest and upgrading monitoring systems will make Cressbrook Dam safer and more resilient, giving the community greater confidence in this critical water asset.
“In partnership with Toowoomba Regional Council, we are helping deliver safe, affordable and reliable water services for the region into the future.”
Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said the start of construction was a welcomed milestone for the region, delivering on the Crisafulli Government’s commitment to strengthen critical water infrastructure.
“Cressbrook Dam is an important piece of infrastructure for communities across the region, and it’s great to see construction now getting underway,” Ms Frecklington said.
“This project is about more than concrete and construction, it’s about protecting communities, securing our water supply and building the infrastructure regional Queensland needs to grow.
“The Crisafulli Government made a commitment to support this project, and we’re delivering on that commitment with $54 million on the table to get this critical work moving.”
