Consultation: Bus safety regulatory reforms

Vic Department of Transport

The Department of Transport (DoT) is inviting feedback and submissions on bus safety regulatory reforms.

The provision of safe bus services is a priority for the Victorian Government. That’s why DoT is working to improve standards for Victoria’s bus operators while also cutting red tape.

DoT has already made a number of changes to strengthen bus safety laws through amendments to the Bus Safety Act. The operator accreditation and registration schemes have been simplified and consolidated into one accreditation system. These changes will come into effect on 1 March 2022.

What is being proposed in the bus safety reforms?

DoT is seeking feedback on proposed amendments to the Bus Safety Regulations 2020 to implement the new accreditation system. The proposed amendments relate to:

  • Exemptions from bus operator accreditation
  • A short-form safety management system
  • Number plates
  • Accreditation fees
