Consultation opens on revised design for Huon Highway intersection upgrade

Jacquie Petrusma,Liberal Member for Franklin

Final consultation is now open for a revised concept design for critical safety upgrades at the Huon Highway/Sandfly Road intersection.

This important road safety upgrade is fully funded and being fast tracked as part of the Morrison Government and Tasmanian Liberal Government’s $46 million boost to deliver shovel-ready infrastructure projects and urgent road safety upgrades.

The Australian Government has committed $5 million and the Tasmanian Government has committed $2 million to this project.

The revised design was developed following community consultation on the initial concept design in July 2019. The design has been reconfigured to address the issues of confusion in the centre of the intersection and obscured driver vision raised during the consultation process.

The revised concept design is a breakthrough for this project, which will improve road safety and provide safer bus and freight transport movements at the intersection.

The design includes:

  • Elongated and widened medians to provide room for buses and trucks to wait safely;
  • A new slip lane;
  • Relocation of an existing slip lane and the uphill overtaking lane;
  • Improved pedestrian, cycle and car parking facilities;
  • Better access to bus stops; and
  • Improved lighting through the intersection.

Consultation is open from today, Friday, July 3, until 5pm Friday, July 31. The community will be able to provide feedback online, through an interactive map.
