Continued Greening In Darwin City Centre

Darwin City Council

A leading design and engineering firm has been commissioned to deliver a design that will transform a Darwin city centre street into a cool, green and dynamic pedestrian hub.

City of Darwin has engaged GHD’s Darwin-based office to develop the concept design for the Smith Street Streetscape project, which will see a section of the busy drag receive a facelift through additional greening; improved pedestrian and active transport access; and enhancements to amenity.

City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he was delighted to collaborate with the Northern Territory Government on another project that would focus on the activation of Darwin’s spaces and places.

“The Smith Street Streetscape project is a part of our ongoing partnership with the NT Government to transform Darwin into a more vibrant and liveable tropical city,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“Not only will we see more trees, but we also hope to see the installation of bike and scooter lanes, upgrades made to pedestrian infrastructure, more street furniture and more public art opportunities included in the concept design.

“Once the concept design has been developed, we will share it the with the community and stakeholders so people can give us their feedback,” he said.

The Smith Street Streetscape project is a further commitment towards City of Darwin’s and the NT Government’s common vision for Darwin’s future as a liveable and tropical capital city, supported by a growing population and diversified economy.

The NT Government has committed $3 million to the project, with City of Darwin delivering the project.

Construction is anticipated to commence in March 2025 with works expected to be completed by June 2025.
