The Cook Government is demonstrating its commitment to access and inclusion through a range of translated resources, aimed at reaching diverse groups in the community.
The ‘VOL_NTEER. We need U’ campaign, launched earlier this year, is an initiative aimed at promoting volunteering in Western Australia across a diverse range of organisations.
To effectively engage all members of the public, the campaign has utilised translation services and channels to specifically reach Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) communities, young people and other diverse groups.
Campaign resources, including social media tiles, posters and newsletters, have been translated into several languages spoken at home in WA. This includes simplified Chinese, Italian, Vietnamese, Arabic, Korean, Hindi, Indonesian, Hazaraghi, Karen and Spanish to assist CaLD organisations to promote volunteering.
Concurrently, the elder abuse resource ‘Everything you’ve ever wondered (and more) about Elder Abuse’, published by the Department of Communities, has been translated into Auslan by an accredited National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) translator for the first time.
This measure ensures resources are accessible to the WA Deaf community and fulfills the aims of the WA Language Services Policy 2020.
The material provides a simple, clear summary of what constitutes elder abuse and steps that people can take to protect themselves and access support.
This work is part of an ongoing commitment by the Cook Government to make online resources more accessible for all Western Australians.

As stated by Seniors and Ageing; Disability Services; Volunteering Minister Don Punch:
“These translated resources demonstrate a positive and proactive step towards greater inclusion and accessibility for all Western Australians.
“With one in six Western Australians Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and nearly one in five residents speaking a language other than English, it is vital that we acknowledge and respond to the value of diversity in our community.
“It is my hope that these resources can make a positive impact that leads to greater awareness, understanding and real change in our community.”
