The festive season can be a joyful time, filled with celebration, family and connection. But when cancer is part of the picture, Christmas can also feel overwhelming, stressful or bittersweet. Treatment schedules, fatigue, financial pressures and emotions can all change what this time of year looks like.

Everyone’s experience is different, and there’s no “right” way to feel or celebrate. If you’re not feeling festive this year, the best gift you can give is to be kind to yourself. Here are some strategies to help make this time of year easier.

  1. Plan around energy levels

Treatment and recovery can be exhausting. Listen to your body and remember the most meaningful moments don’t have to take hours. Try to reframe your expectations, for example:

  • Keep gatherings simple or shorter
  • Incorporate rest breaks or quieter days
  • Have a “plan B” and bow out early or skip events if you need to
  1. Nourish yourself

If you have cancer or are supporting someone with cancer, your wellbeing matters. Take time out to do things that you enjoy. Whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, listening to music or relaxation yoga, it’s important to give yourself permission to do things that replenish your energy and say no to things that deplete you.
