Omicron sub-lineage detections in wastewater

There has been a total of 15 wastewater detections of the BA.4 or BA.5 strain in Victoria. There has been a total of 5 wastewater detections of the BA.2.12.1 strain.

Evidence suggests these Omicron sub-lineages are more transmissible than Omicron BA.2 but do not cause more severe disease.

Health authorities continue to sequence PCR samples from a proportion of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases and are undertaking wastewater testing to better understand the prevalence and distribution of the Omicron sub-lineages in Victoria.
