Cessnock City Council and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) have waived waste fees for residents impacted by last week’s bushfire.

The change, which came into effect today, means residents can dispose of materials affected by the recent fire at the Cessnock Waste Management Centre, free of charge.

The fee exemption applies to residents who reside in fire affected properties in Abermain, Neath, Kurri Kurri, Weston, Pelaw Main and Stanford Merthyr.

Mayor Jay Suvaal said the fee exemption for those impacted was an important step Cessnock City Council could make help people get back on their feet.

“It’s vital that we come together as a community to support our neighbours, families and friends impacted by this awful event,” said Clr Suvaal.

“Waiving waste fees is one simple but important step Council was able to take to provide immediate support to those directly impacted by the recent Cessnock Road Fire.”

The change was the result of Council approaching the EPA requesting a fee exemption.

Anyone presenting with fire affected waste materials will be required to provide the address the material originated from and proof they live at the address, such as a rates notice or drivers licence.

Fee exemptions remain in place until 31 January 2024.
