Isaac Regional Council has given its backing to the International Legends of League to stage an exhibition game against an Isaac All Stars team at Darryl Brooke Oval and school visits on 16-18 September 2021.
Mayor Anne Baker said the knock-on effect for local communities through re-activating events during COVID is part of Council’s goals to deliver programs targeting the wellbeing of Isaac’s youth.
“In addition to the match, the legends of league will visit schools to raise awareness of mental health issues and deliver football coaching clinics,” Mayor Baker said.
“They will talk about bullying, the potential dangers of social media, youth suicide, health, exercise and promoting self-confidence and wellbeing through their dream, believe, achieve philosophy.
“The proposed school visits include schools in Moranbah, Dysart, Middlemount, Glenden, Clermont and Nebo.”
Deputy Mayor Kelly Vea Vea, who is the chair of the Planning, Environment and Community Services standing committee, said more details about the main event will be shared in coming weeks.
“The main event will be between a team of former rugby league greats play against our local side which will comprise of former players from local teams aged over 35,” Cr Vea Vea said.
“Former players involved in the program that have been confirmed for this event include Scott Prince, Ben Hannant, Cliff Lyons, Nev Costigan, Tom Learoyd-lahrs, Noel Goldthorpe, Kerry Boustead, Stu Kelly, Brenton Bowen, Jaimon Lowe and Peter Gill with more big names soon to be announced.”
Mayor Baker said profits from the event will be donated to a local charity and local sporting groups operating food and beverage canteens retain its profits.
“International Legends of League has delivered events in more than 60 rural and regional communities,” Mayor Baker said.
“They are also seeking corporate sponsorship and I urge you to call our Council’s engaged communities’ team on 1300 ISAACS to register your interest.
“These visits are extremely well-received by our communities and popular former league players will no doubt be a bit hit with locals when they are in Isaac.
“It would be fantastic for this year’s competition to be successful and for local businesses to come on board and support it.”
Legends of League representative Craig Teevan said the team is looking forward to bringing this event to Isaac.
“It will be a massive week getting around to all of the schools in the region and help raise some good funds for grass roots rugby league,” Mr Teevan said.
“This is also a great event for the public to come along and see their former heroes in person, mix with them socially and watch them in action on the field once again.”
The event is also proudly supported by Community Mental Wellness Partner, the Queensland Government.
