Wingecarribee Shire Council is celebrating Local Government Week by showcasing the diverse range of services provided by councils across the State.
Wingecarribee Shire Council’s General Manager Lisa Miscamble said all councils played an integral part in everyday life.
“Local Government has the most direct and immediate contact with residents,” she said.
“Whether picking up and managing residential waste, maintaining local roads or providing water and sewerage services to your house; barely a day goes by where you wouldn’t use a service or facility provided by Council.”
Other essential infrastructure managed by the State’s 128 councils include the management and coordination of hundreds of pools, leisure centres, public libraries and cemeteries and thousands of parks, gardens, public spaces, community halls and public facilities.
“As an example, within our Shire alone Council is responsible for 38 bushland reserves covering an area 3000 hectares in size which includes several hundreds of kilometres of waterways,” Ms Miscamble said.
The General Manager said councils also played an important role in local economies.
“Seventy per cent of our staff live in the Southern Highlands,” she said. “We’re extremely proud to employ hundreds of skilled local people whose chief role is to give back to their community.”
Local Government Week is this year being held from Monday 2 August to Sunday 8 August.
“While many of this year’s Local Government Week activities have been cut back because of COVID we’ll look at hosting some events when it’s safe to do so,” Ms Miscamble said.
