Council invests in Annandale school safety

Townsville City Council is investing in school safety through the construction of a new footpath at the entrance to Annandale Christian College.

The new 130 metre long, 1.5 metre wide footpath in Jonquil Crescent will be constructed using a new environmentally-friendly concrete mix Council has recently trialled on a footpath at Darling Road in Jensen.

Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said the project would make the area safer for both road users and pedestrians.

“Jonquil Crescent can become quite a busy little street around school hours, so it’s important as a Council we can invest in infrastructure that will increase public safety,” Cr Greaney said.

“We had identified that this was a section of our active transport network we could improve on to make sure our students get to and from school safely.

“The completed project will link the existing footpath on the corner of Cyprus Drive to an entrance of Annandale Christian College in Jonquil Crescent and will span roughly 130 metres.”

Cr Greaney said Council staff had worked with the residents in the area on the design of the new footpath.

“Our Council officers have been in detailed consultation with the residents in the area and we appreciate the community’s feedback and look forward to the works being completed prior to the school year commencing,” she said.

Works will commence on 10 January 2022 and are expected to take three weeks, weather and conditions permitting.
