Council puts locals to test on water conservation

Time is running out for Townsville residents to test how water wise they are for a chance to win up to $500 in vouchers.

Townsville City Council’s Water Wiser Quiz closes next Thursday 31 August, and is aimed at testing locals’ knowledge on water conservation measures.

Townsville Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said it was as simple as completing a quiz to go into the draw to win one of five $100 vouchers to spend at local water smart businesses.

“There are five multiple choice questions to answer all about water conservation tips and tricks aimed at reducing the amount of water we use around the home,” Cr Cook said.

“Winners of the vouchers can spend it at local water smart businesses for items to help reduce their water use further.

“This quiz is one of the ways Council is spreading awareness to the community about what role it can play in conserving water and improving water use practices.

“And they’re all simple things that require little effort but can make a big difference.”

Cr Cook said Council was committed to educating the community to help with the protection and promotion of our dry tropics and reef coast.

“Water scarcity is a big issue affecting every country and groups like UNESCO, the UN and UNICEF have all highlighted the decline of water availability,” he said.

“Water is a precious resource and Council has taken considerable steps to strengthen water availability in our city as Townsville continues to grow.

“Council has invested in projects to reduce our water use and further improve our water security, and there are simple things we can all do at home to conserve water.

“About 70 percent of all residential household water use in Townsville goes to keeping gardens and lawns lushes and green.

“Some of the small things everyone can do is water your lawns and gardens once every three days, use low flow sprinklers and check and repair any water leaks.

“Even simple things inside the home like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save more than 20,000 litres of water each year.”

The quiz is live now and closes on Thursday 31 August.
