Georges River Council has resolved to retain the words “War Memorial” in the name of the new aquatic facility currently under construction at Carss Park and will undertake community consultation on future naming options.
At its meeting on Monday 26 October 2026, Council endorsed a 28-day community consultation process to assist in determining a name for the new facility, with any future name required to include the words “War Memorial”.
Council also resolved that a future report be presented outlining community feedback and potential naming options that align with Council’s Place Naming Policy.
The decision recognises the historical significance of the former Kogarah War Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool and the strong connection many residents, veterans and community organisations have to the site’s legacy.
On 22 October 2026, Mayor Elise Borg received correspondence from RSL NSW expressing disappointment that the name of the former pool was not proposed to be retained for the new facility. The report tabled for discussion and a decision at the October meeting of Council had not proposed a name.
As part of the consultation process, Council will engage with key stakeholders, including local RSL sub-branches and RSL NSW.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said the decision reflects the community’s long-standing commitment to recognising the history and significance of the site.
“I have personally supported retaining ‘War Memorial’ in the facility’s name. Throughout the campaign to rebuild this pool, we worked closely with local RSLs, veterans and community advocates who shared our commitment to preserving the site’s heritage while securing its future,” Mayor Borg said.
“The new facility will provide modern aquatic and recreational amenities for our growing community, while continuing to honour the legacy of the former Kogarah War Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool.”
“We welcome the opportunity for the community to have its say on the facility’s name. While Council has resolved that ‘War Memorial’ will remain part of the name, the consultation process will help shape how the facility is formally recognised into the future.”
Community consultation will be undertaken for 28 days to help determine the facility’s final name, which will include the words “War Memorial”. Consultation is now available via Council’s Your Say Project webpage.
