Council votes to protect Casey employment areas

The City of Casey has revised its position on a 133 hectare parcel of land at Hall Road and Westernport Highway in Cranbourne West to ensure it is retained as an employment precinct for the future.

Following a resolution at the 1 December 2020 Council Meeting, Council will no longer support Amendment C219 which sought to rezone this land from employment to residential.

The decision follows the publication of two recent State Government Reports, the Melbourne Industrial and Commercial Land Use Plan (April 2020) and the South East Economic Corridor Strategic Context Report to 2060 (October 2020), that highlighted the demand for employment zoned land across Melbourne.

It also takes into account the Victorian Planning Minister’s decision in April 2020 to not support Amendment C219.

As a result, Council resolved to formally support the retention of this land as employment land within the existing Cranbourne West Precinct Structure Plan area, as well as within the future Casey Fields South Employment Precinct Structure Plan area. Ensuring these areas are retained for employment purposes will help provide local jobs and boost future employment opportunities within the City of Casey.

Council has written to all stakeholders and nearby property owners to inform them of Council’s resolution regarding these two employment areas.

The retention of employment land within Cranbourne West means that Council officers will ensure an appropriate buffer between employment and residential uses is maintained and good design outcomes are achieved as development occurs.

In addition, the community will have the opportunity to provide feedback to the upcoming Casey Fields South Employment Precinct Structure Plan upon commencement of the planning process for this precinct by the State Government.
