Hobsons Bay City Council has welcomed a commitment from the Victorian Labor party to invest $79 million towards upgrading the intersection of Central Avenue and Point Cook Road in Altona Meadows.
The proposed upgrade would address safety issues and congestion by introducing traffic lights and widening Central Avenue to Skehan Boulevard.
The announcement was made earlier this week by Labor candidate for Point Cook, Mat Hilakari.
The Point Cook Road/Central Avenue intersection was identified as one of Council’s key transport advocacy priorities in the Advocacy Strategy 2021-25.
Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Cr Peter Hemphill, said the intersection had been a long-held concern for Council and the local community.
“This intersection is a well-known hotspot for traffic congestion and safety concerns,” Cr Hemphill said.
“People in Point Cook and Altona Meadows rely on cars to get them to and from work and this is one of the few freeway access points for both suburbs.
“The current double-diamond design of the intersection is simply not appropriate for a residential area, with vehicles entering and exiting from multiple directions and pedestrians and cyclists dodging between them to cross the road.
“Vehicles often exit the Princes Freeway at speed, causing a major hazard for pedestrians and cyclists.”
