The Australian Border Force (ABF) has made a large detection of counterfeit luxury goods at Melbourne International airport.
On 17 September 2023 ABF officers examined and x-rayed the bags of a Morwell man returning from Vietnam, discovering an array of trademark infringing items from sunglasses, accessories, and imitation jewellery.
The fakes were detected within five boxes and included items branded Gucci, Chanel, Prada, Dior, Balenciaga, Versace and Burberry sunglasses; and accessories and imitation jewellery branded Prada, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Bvlgari and YSL. A total of 493 counterfeit items were detected.
Superintendent Aviation Traveller Melbourne Airport, Kelly-anne Parish, said ABF officers employ sophisticated detection tools at the border to ensure counterfeit goods do not make it into the community.
“Our message to individuals attempting to bring counterfeit luxury goods into Australia is simple – do not engage in this activity because we will hold you to account and it will result in significant financial penalties,” Superintendent Parish said.
Reports of suspected importation of counterfeit goods can be made at Border Watch. Reports can be made anonymously.
“If anyone believes individuals or businesses are attempting to bring counterfeit goods into Australia these concerns can be reported through Border Watch,” Acting Superintendent Parish said.
