COVID-19 Infringement – Failure to wear mask

Northern Territory Police have issued an infringement notice to a 45-year-old woman from Victoria for failing to abide by the Chief Health Officer Direction to wear a face mask at the Darwin International Airport.

The woman refused to provide proof of a medical exemption or any other reason to support her claim that she is not able to wear a mask.

Incident Controller Acting Commander James A. O’Brien said the Chief Health Officer direction for people to wear a face mask within any airport in the Northern Territory is designed to keep Territorians safe.

“It is a shame to see that some people disregard this direction even after multiple requests to abide by it. Putting other lives at risk is not acceptable.”

The infringement penalty for failing to abide by the Chief Health Officers Directions issued under section 56 of the Public and Environment Health Act 2011 is $5,056 for an individual and $25,280 for a business.
