Northern Territory Police have issued a 34-year-old man with an infringement for breaching the Chief Health Officer Directions.
Officers on the Border Check Point at Kulgera yesterday became suspicious of a man who had passed through the checkpoint, stating on his entry form that he had left Victoria 15 days earlier.
Investigations revealed the man had previously submitted a border entry form noting a Victoria address, then lodged a second form after the hotspot declaration, this time omitting his Victorian travel details.
Police located the man at Yulara, where he admitted the breach. He was tested for COVID-19 at the clinic before being issued an infringement and escorted back to the SA/NT border.
Incident Controller Acting Commander Sachin Sharma said, “We understand the frustrations that people are feeling by extended lockdowns and travel restrictions, but they are in place to stop COVID-19 from spreading. NT Police will continue to enforce the Chief Health Officer’s Direction to keep Territorians safe.”
The penalty for failing to abide by the Chief Health Officer Directions issued under section 56 of the Public and Environment Health Act 2011 is $5024 for an individual (32 penalty units) and $25,120 for a business (160 penalty units).
