Cr Angelica Panopoulos elected as Merri-bek’s youngest ever Mayor

Cr Panopoulos delivered her acceptance speech at Coburg Civic Centre this evening.

“Being elected as Mayor sends a very clear message to or community that young people and young women have the right to be in leadership positions in all parts of our society. The democratic process belongs to all of us,” Cr Panopoulos said.

“We have a wonderful, engaged community in Merri-bek and it is my honour to serve them with integrity over my term. Merri-bek is a great place to live, work on play, but there is always more work to be done.

“We are the closest level of government to our community and have a responsibility to address issues on their behalf.

“Key actions over the next year will include beginning construction of the Fawkner Leisure Centre redevelopment and Saxon Street Community Hub, introducing a new 4-bin system which will reduce waste sent to landfill, continuing our work to mitigate the impacts of climate change on our community, and advocating to the State Government on its Level Crossing Removal Project in Brunswick.”

A lifelong local, Cr Panopoulos is in her first term as a Merri-bek City Councillor. She was elected in 2020 to represent the North-West Ward of Merri-bek.

Councillor Helen Davidson, 3-term councillor and former Mayor, was elected Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months.

“It’s an honour to be elected as Deputy Mayor of Merri-bek. In this capacity, I will continue to be a powerful voice for the people of Merri-bek, listening to the concerns of our residents and advocating for improved services and infrastructure.”
