Council is looking to commission a unique art piece to support its first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP will reflect the reconciliation priorities of its traditional owners and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
The art piece will be created by a local indigenous artist, a representative from one of our three registered Aboriginal parties or other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander People who reside in the Macedon Ranges. The artwork will feature on the cover of the RAP document and accompanying promotional material and be used during RAP-related activities.
The call for artworks is open to artists identifying as either Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung or Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung.
The theme for the artwork needs to reflect the histories and cultures of the three Traditional Owner groups, based on conversations with the Registered Aboriginal Parties and/or Elders. Mayor, Cr Janet Pearce said the artwork would also reflect the Council’s vision for reconciliation.
“Our vision for reconciliation is one of equality and unity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Peoples and all Macedon Ranges communities which recognises past injustices, our shared history and shared future and strengthens Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ right to self-determination,” Cr Pearce said.
The successful artwork will be selected by a small independent panel consisting of members from Council’s RAP Working Group including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander representatives.
The commissioned artwork will be in either painting, drawing, collage or other two-dimensional form e.g. a photograph of a sculptural artwork made for the RAP. As part of the project, Council will acquire the artwork so it can be displayed in customer service centres and other Council buildings.
