Creating Job and Engagement Opportunities for Territory Students

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is investing $8 million per year into our Vocation Education Training (VET) programs to make sure we are engaging our youth and making them workforce ready.

The Palmerston Youth Skills Centre provides flexible training for secondary school students and youth who have disengaged or are at risk of disengaging from school. It will also provide young people leaving detention with a supportive and inspiring re-entry into learning.

A total of 328 Territory students have engaged with the Centre since its opening in June 2021.

Around 115 of these students have obtained formal qualifications and vital skills to enable them to transition from school to work, and 130 students have engaged in the try-a-trade engagement program.

Courses enable students to receive qualifications across a range of industries including engineering, animal studies, hospitality, electro-technology, construction and automotive.

All VET courses on offer at the Centre are nationally accredited, delivered by registered training organisations and offered at the Australian Qualifications Framework levels I and II.

Quotes attributed to Chief Minister Natasha Fyles:

“To continue to grow our economy and make sure we have the Territorians to fill jobs, we need to make sure we have the facilities to run VET programs.

“VET students, apprentices and trainees are crucial to the Northern Territory workforce, and the Territory Labor Government is supporting their career journey – this is why we are investing $8 million per year into the VET program.

“Industries experiencing staff shortages, such as hospitality, will also benefit from job-ready graduates.”
