Critical incident declared after crash in Strathfield

A critical incident investigation has been launched into a crash at Strathfield this morning.

Just before 12.30am (Tuesday 24 January 2023), officers from Auburn Highway Patrol were patrolling Centenary Drive, Strathfield, when they attempted to stop the driver of a silver Audi.

The vehicle, which had rolled onto its roof, was engulfed in flames.

With assistance from members of the public, police attempted to remove the occupants, but were unsuccessful.

After Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze, two bodies were found in the vehicle. They are yet to be formally identified.

A critical incident team from the Fairfield City Police Area Command will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject to independent review.
