Critical incident investigation launched into man’s death at Rockdale, NSW

A critical incident investigation has been launched following the death of a man during a confrontation with police in Rockdale early this morning.

Police attended the vicinity of Bay Street, Rockdale, about 11.45pm (Sunday 19 April 2020), following concerns for the welfare of a man.

On arrival, officers from St George Police Area Command conducted a search of nearby bushland with the assistance of PolAir and the Dog Unit.

Just before 12.40am (Monday 20 April 2020), a 51-year-old man allegedly armed with knives and a hammer threatened police before he was shot.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

A critical incident team from the Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review.

All information will be provided to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading to the man’s death.
