Damage to Zig Zag Sporting Field

Lithgow Council

As a result of recent vandalism, the Zig Zag Oval on Bells Road, Lithgow will be unsuitable for use from 25 April 2022.

“Over the past 4 months, Lithgow City Council and the community have grappled with the ongoing impacts of floods and pandemics, alongside the lasting effects of the 2019 bushfire,” said Lithgow City Council’s Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham. “Our recovery from these disasters will be a long process but I have every confidence that the resilience of Council and the community will see us bounce back stronger than ever.”

“However, I am very displeased to have to advise of the temporary closure of the Zig Zag Oval in Oakey Park because of vandalism,” said Mayor Statham. “The damage caused by vehicles sliding around Zig Zag Oval will cost the Council approximately $8,000 and see the asset closed to community use for several weeks. I am disgusted by this display of disrespect and disregard for the needs of our community during this difficult time.”

“We should not need to gate our assets for their protection,” noted Mayor Statham. “However, should such acts continue, the Council will have no choice. With roads and water infrastructure programmed for urgent renewal, this is a cost that we do not need.”

As a result of this vandalism, Council must close the Zig Zag Oval to public use until further notice. Repairs will commence in the coming weeks however, as we enter the winter season, it is likely the field will return to its prior condition until spring. Council apologises for the inconvenience and will work with all hirers of the facility to make alternative arrangements.
