Dangerous driving and attempted robbery charges at Gold Coast

Coomera detectives have charged a man with six offences including dangerous driving, drink driving and attempted robbery following a series of incident on the Coast today (Monday, May 23).

It will be alleged that a 2016 white Mercedes-Benz station wagon was stolen from Price Street, Nerang at around 2.10pm.

During the course of the next several hours police received reports from the public of the vehicle allegedly being driven erratically, at high speeds and dangerously.

At around 4.30pm the vehicle entered the driveway of an Alexander Drive, Highland Park petrol station and after doing several laps it was driven, at speed, into the glass front doors, smashing them.

At around 4.40pm the stolen car was involved in a hit and run traffic crash on Aurura Crescent, Worongary, after it collided head-on with another vehicle. No one was injured.

The vehicle then drove into the driveway of a Tristiania Way, Highland Park home around 5pm, smashing into the garage door, before reversing out and colliding with a parked car.

Sometime around 5pm it will be alleged the driver of the stolen station wagon pulled in behind a car parked in a carpark on Bay Street at Southport.

He exited the vehicle and threatened the two occupants, a man and woman, demanding they get out. They refused and he eventually retreated, after kicking out at their vehicle, back to the stolen Mercedes and sped off.

He then drove to Hanlan Street, Surfers Paradise where he abandoned the car at around 6pm and fled on foot.

Multiple police units saturated the area, including the dog squad, and he was taken into custody soon after on Surfers Paradise Boulevard.

An 18-year-old Highland Park man has been denied police bail and is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow (May 24) charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, drive while under the influence of liquor or a drug, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, attempted robbery, wilful damage and drive without a licence while disqualified.

No one was injured during the course of these incidents.

The public are thanked for the information they provided to Police Communications, which was relayed to police searching for the stolen vehicle, and greatly assisted officers.
