Dangerous driving appeal, Bribie Island

Police are seeking witnesses to an incident of dangerous driving at a lagoon water crossing on Ocean Beach, Bribie Island on Saturday, February 5.

At about 10.30am a Nissan Patrol utility was seen accelerating into a deep water crossing towards swimmers, who had to quickly move out of its path.

Due to the depth of the water, the vehicle was unable to cross and became submerged.

Police are releasing footage of the incident, and are asking the swimmers involved or any witnesses to come forward.

Members of the public are reminded of the changing nature of the conditions on the northern end of Bribie Island. Due to recent weather conditions there has seen a cutting off of the Northern tip of the island beyond the Lions Park at certain tides and times.

Members of the public are reminded this cutting changes with the tidal and weather conditions and can become impassable. Those who intend to cross this inlet to the northern tip of the island should remain aware of conditions to safely negotiate an exit to the southern side of the inlet. This may include walking the depth of the crossing to ensure it is passable and there are no obstructions but would definitely include ensuring there are no pedestrians or swimmers in the line of travel to traverse this crossing.
