Darnum Recreation Reserve to shine bright with lighting upgrades

The AFL Oval and Netball Courts at Darnum Recreation Reserve will soon undergo much needed upgrades with the installation of new light towers and LED light fittings throughout the facility.

The Darnum Recreation Reserve Sports Lighting Upgrade Project will improve the quality of the lighting at the reserve and bring it up to equal standard with other Council owned facilities.

The scope of works includes:

AFL Oval

  • The installation of 4 new light towers to a height of 27m with LED lights fittings to achieve an average of 100 Lux
  • Upgraded electrical cabling and associated infrastructure
  • Relevant Lux testing and compliance certification

Netball Courts

  • The installation of 4 new light towers to a height of 12m with lighting to an average minimum of 200 Lux
  • Upgrade electrical cabling and associated infrastructure
  • Relevant lux testing and compliance certification

Nilma Darnum Football Netball Club Secretary Trish Price was overjoyed with the announcement and what the investment will mean for Darnum sporting clubs. “For a number of years, the football lights have been substandard, at the start of this season we were down to just 2 of the 4 light poles working” she said.

“This meant we could only use half the ground to train. With the help of a generator, we now have 3 poles working but this is still not ideal. Over at the netball courts we have black spots where the lights are not strong enough to reach all areas and it makes it hard to train properly.

“This commitment from the Shire will make a massive difference moving forward and we are so excited about the prospect of potentially having a night game next year.”

Incorporated within the draft Long Term Infrastructure Plan, Council has invested $330,000 towards the project for delivery within the 2022/23 financial year. The project is further supported with a State Government contribution of $200,000 through its Country Football Netball Program Round 2 – 2021/2022.

This project is one component of a broader sports lighting upgrade program Council has undertaken throughout the Shire, including works at the Longwarry, Thorpdale and Hallora Recreation Reserves.

“This is an exciting announcement for all the clubs and user groups at Darnum Recreation Reserve. The project will deliver a much more modern, safe and functional space that will benefit a range of participants now and into the future.

Council is committed to grassroots sport, especially within our smaller communities and we thank the State Government’s shared support on this project.”
