Definition Diverse calls for better support for neurodiverse Australians

Autism support organisation Definition Diverse is calling on Australia to implement integrated and adaptive support services for people with autism.

Although popular shows like Love on the Spectrum have highlighted the reality and challenges of living with autism, Australia is falling behind other high-income countries in funding, ensuring access to support, and effective coordination between service systems.

For neurodivergent young people navigating into adulthood, the current system is not fit-for-purpose, according to Dr. Steve Edwards, an Autism and Social Skills Researcher in collaboration with Definition Diverse and Senior Lecturer at Federation University.

“Autism is lifelong. Each person’s expression of autism and ability is unique, and their needs are complex and enduring. It’s high time for those with the power to make a difference to sit up and take note. We need to do better by autistic Australians, and we need to do it now,” he said.

Dr. Edwards is calling for widespread change that accounts for the varied challenges of autism.

“Support systems for young adults with autism are fragmented across different life areas. A problem in one of these areas can flow into other areas and have catastrophic mental health effects.

“A mind shift towards a neurodiverse society is required across the board. While policymakers, medical specialists, therapists, educators, employers and advocacy groups have important roles to play, everyday Australians would also benefit from reflecting on their understanding towards the estimated 1-2% of our population with autism.”

The Lancet Commission global report includes an Australian contribution and provides clear direction for autism care across the world. The paper highlights inadequate support systems and lays out critical recommendations for addressing these to drastically improve outcomes, including integration across support systems and personalised, stepped care models with personalised treatment plans. Dr. Edwards argues that these recommendations could – and should – be urgently applied to the Australian healthcare system.

“We don’t need to reinvent the wheel – much hard work has already been done. If Australia would only tune in and take action, we can better the lives of thousands of neurodivergent young people – and those of our future generations.”
