Delivering on our long-term housing vision

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The Rockliff Liberal Government’s record investment to deliver social and affordable housing is continuing to provide safe, secure and affordable homes for Tasmanians in need.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street said that under Tasmania’s first 20-year Tasmanian Housing Strategy, the Government has committed to delivering more quality homes, faster.

“During October, 106 households on the Housing Register were allocated homes,” Minister Street said.

“This is in addition to the more than 300 households housed between July and September, with a rolling 12-month average of almost 93 per cent being priority applicants from the Housing Register.

“We know the best way to ease pressure on the housing market is to increase supply and that is exactly what we are doing with 653 long-term homes built in the past year, according to the latest housing data.

“There are also 826 social housing homes and units of crisis or supported accommodation in Homes Tasmania’s pipeline of works, which will deliver more homes for Tasmanians in need.”

Homes Tasmania and it’s community housing partners completed 35 new social housing properties in October.

The Rockliff Liberal Government is also supporting more Tasmanians to home ownership through our MyHome Shared Equity Scheme.

“This targeted initiative has supported more than 300 households into home ownership over the past 12 months,” Minister Street said.

“In addition to the more than 14,000 households already living in social housing, 3,710 households were assisted in the past year through social housing, Private Rental Assistance, Private Rental Incentives, Rapid Rehousing or into home ownership.”

The current number of applicants on the Housing Register is 4,672.

“Every Tasmanian deserves a roof over their head and our plan to build more houses faster is critical to achieving our vision to end homelessness in Tasmania and delivering a well-functioning housing system that provides safe, appropriate, and affordable housing for all Tasmanians,” Minister Street said.

“We continue to deliver new housing and homelessness accommodation such as the recently completed units at Rokeby and Bethlehem House, and the soon-to-be-delivered Devonport shelter.

“We are working to deliver the most ambitious long-term housing plan in the State’s history backed by our commitment to deliver 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032.”

A new Housing Dashboard is under development to be released next year to monitor progress against the Tasmanian Housing Strategy 2023-2043.
