Detox your property from chemicals

Wyndham City will help residents detox their homes from highly toxic household chemicals with a special collection day on 16th November.

Wyndham residents are being urged to ditch toxic substances from their homes by disposing of them in a safe, free and easy-to-use service.

Council has set up a Detox your Home collection point to dispose of common, highly toxic household chemicals without harming the community’s health or the environment, at Hoppers Crossing on the 16th November.

Environment and Sustainability Portfolio Holder Cr Heather Marcus said household chemicals could be harmful to family members and was an unnecessary fire accelerant.

“These toxic substances can pollute the environment for future generations, which is why residents should take advantage of the free Detox your Home service to safely dispose of unwanted items,” Cr Marcus said.

Cr Marcus said chemicals should not be disposed of in the regular rubbish collection or down the drain.

“Chemicals can explode, ignite, leak or mix with other chemicals in rubbish bins and if they are poured down the drain, they can pollute waterways, harm animals and vegetation and contaminate drinking water supply. It can also make rivers and beaches unsafe for swimming.”

“The good news is you can reduce the risk of poisoning, environmental pollution and bushfire hazards, as well as improving recycling rates by dropping off unwanted, highly toxic household substances at the drop off point.”

Detox your Home is administered by Sustainability Victoria in partnership with Council and is funded by the Victorian landfill levy. The products collected are recovered and diverted from landfill.

The household chemical collection program is coming to Hoppers Crossing on Saturday 16th November from 9am to 1pm.

Residents can choose their preferred time slot by registering online at sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxyourhome and the exact location will be emailed to you.
