Developing world-class fuels of future in Tasmania

Guy Barnett, Minister for Energy and Renewables

The Rockliff Liberal Government welcomes the exciting news of further progress by one of the world’s leading eFuels companies, HIF Global, for their proposed new Australian plant set to be located in the North-West of Tasmania.

HIF Global’s commercial scale facility is expected to begin operation in 2027 – delivering up to 100 million litres of carbon neutral eFuels, and 260,000 tonnes of avoided CO2 emissions, per year.

Minister for Energy and Renewables, Guy Barnett, welcomed today’s news that HIF Global has engaged Technip Energies to help assess the technology options and initiate plant design.

“This is a further sign that this Government’s ambitious long-term plan for renewable energy is attracting premium investment and building confidence and opportunities in our regions,” he said.

“Green hydrogen provides a critical enabler in Australia’s energy transition and Tasmania has competitive advantages to offer industry and the world.

“We have an ambitious plan for growing our economy and creating more jobs through the development of world-class fuels of the future, like the green hydrogen sector.

“Our green hydrogen vision, set out in our Tasmanian Renewable Hydrogen Action Plan, is for Tasmania to be a global leader in large scale green hydrogen production by 2030.”

HIF Global believes their Tasmanian project will employ 200 permanent full-time workers and have output equivalent to decarbonising about 60,000 vehicles.
