Digging Trees in Port Kembla – Wollongong

Pull on your gardening gloves and head to Port Kembla’s Coomaditchie Lagoon this Saturday for a Community Tree Planting Day.

The day will see five established Moreton Bay Fig trees and five established Port Jackson Fig trees planted along the Parkes Street side of the Lagoon as part of the rollout of Council’s Urban Greening Strategy.

We’re also encouraging people to come along and nominate their street as a location Council should consider for street trees in as part of our commitment to put in at least 250 established trees in Port Kembla this financial year.

“Our Urban Greening Strategy outlines Council’s commitment to increasing our city’s tree canopy cover and Port Kembla has some of the lowest canopy cover in our Local Government Area,” Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“We know trees offer cooling shade and improve community health and I applaud those passionate Port Kembla residents who have come to Council and asked for our support to plant more trees in their area. This is the first suburb-focused tree planting day that has been coordinated under the Urban Greening Strategy and it won’t be our last. I encourage everyone to come along and get involved.”

Planting will start from 10am with a Welcome to Country and formalities taking place at 10.30am. There will also be a sausage sizzle and a plant giveaway for residents looking to green up their own gardens.

As part of the day some of Council’s qualified arborists and horticulturalists will be on hand to answer questions about trees and gardening.

The Coomaditchie Lagoon Community Tree Planting Day is on Saturday 19 October from 10am-12 noon.
