The Rockliff Liberal Government welcomes a significant milestone in plans to develop an adventure hub at Dismal Swamp, on the North-West Coast, following Parliamentary approval for the proclamation of’ 92 hectares of land as regional reserve.
The land, previously classified as Future Potential Production Forest, will be incorporated into the Dismal Swamp Regional Reserve and allow for a long-term lease to be considered for development of a tourism experience on the site.
Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, said the reserve includes the footprint of existing infrastructure associated with the previous Dismal Swamp Experience.
“The Rockliff Liberal Government is doing what matters for Tasmanians by growing the economy and creating jobs in regional communities, and the State’s Far North-West will benefit from tourism infrastructure stimulation and reinvestment,” Minister Duigan said.
“The potential development of the Tarkine Adventure Hub within the Dismal Swamp Regional Reserve has been projected to bring an additional 10,000 visitors to the Far North-West, with an additional $9 million in annual visitor expenditure across Tasmania.
“This is a significant project for the Far North-West of Tasmania and aligns with broader tourism initiatives to boost visitor numbers to that region. The proposal is positioned to capitalise on the booming caravan and camping sector, as well as the upcoming introduction of two new Spirit of Tasmania passenger vessels, which will have greater vehicle capacity,” Minister Duigan said.
The public will be invited to have their say on any proposal for the site, which will be considered under the relevant Local, State and Commonwealth Government approval processes.
The Australian Government has committed $12.5 million to the proposed development.
