Distinguished kidney researcher joins Academy

Flinders University’s contributions to national health continue to grow with the election of its head of medicine and public health as a new Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.

Professor Jonathan Craig, Vice President of the College of Medicine and Public Health, was elected to the learned Academy in its round of 2019 appointments announced this month.

The prestigious appointment recognises exceptional input to health and medical science in Australia and an ongoing commitment to building the nation’s health. Fellows represent the Academy as an independent voice, forming a vital connection in its engagement with the community, industry and governments.

Professor Craig joined Flinders in April 2018 in his current role as Vice President and Executive Dean, bringing significant research and practical contributions in the prevention, identification, management and treatment of chronic kidney disease, particularly in relation to children and within Indigenous communities.

He was recently named by The Australian as the nation’s top researcher in the field of urology and nephrology, reflecting his record of about 800 papers and two decades of continuous NHMRC grant funding.

Outside of his University role, Professor Craig advises on many health boards, including as a member of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Health Translation Advisory Committee, member of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee, member of the Medicare Services Advisory Committee, member of the Life-Saving Drugs Expert Panel, member of the International Advisory Panel for Singapore’s Agency for Care Effectiveness, and immediate past President of the Australia-NZ Society of Nephrology.

He has been recognised by multiple awards, contributed on international panels including for a World Health Organisation expert review, and led national and international frameworks to conduct clinical trials and develop best-practice guidelines to manage chronic kidney disease.

Professor Craig joins a host of Flinders’ Fellows sharing their expertise to support the important work of the Academy, including Professor Fran Baum, Professor Alison Kitson, Professor Ross McKinnon, Professor John Miners, Professor David Watson, Professor Justine Smith, Professor Karen Reynolds and Emeritus Professor Keryn Williams.
