Dolphin Tungsten Project creates jobs, boosts economy

Roger Jaensch,Minister for State Growth

King Islanders are already benefiting from the commencement of the Dolphin Tungsten Project at Grassy, with new jobs and money flowing into local businesses as significant earthworks get underway to prepare the site for return to operation.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has supported Group 6 Metals’ plans with a $10 million commercial loan plus a $2 million grant to Hydro for infrastructure upgrades on King Island.

The Group 6 Metals project at the reactivated mine site will create an estimated 90 full-time equivalent jobs during construction and with around 60 ongoing full-time equivalent jobs on King Island when fully operational.

The project is expected to inject more than $5 million directly into the King Island economy through salaries alone and Tasmania is set to receive more than $30 million in royalties and taxes over the life of the project.

Host to one of the highest-grade tungsten deposits in the Western World, the site hasn’t generated a local return or economic activity since closing in the early 1990s.

I commend Group 6 Metals for their determination to get the project started, and the King Island community for their unwavering support.

and This is exactly the sort of project and investment we need to boost confidence and business activity in regional Tasmania.
